A vibrant depiction of the Sand Covered Church and surrounding landscape in Skagen, Denmark in this oil painting on canvas by Einar Gross (Danish, 1895-1962). The Sand-Covered Church is a late 14th-century church dedicated to Saint Lawrence of Rome. During the last half of the 18th century the church was partially buried by sand from nearby dunes; the congregation had to dig out the entrance each time a service was to be held. The struggle to keep the church free of sand lasted until 1795, when it was abandoned. The church was demolished, leaving the tower with crow-stepped gable as the only part of the original structure still standing. Artwork in vintage gilded wood frame measures 19.5" x 22.75". Artwork in very good age appropriate condition with light wear - including some very light craquelure. Frame also in good age appropriate condition with light scattered wear.
