Large Gouache Painting of Bacchus and Ariadne Sailboats in Seascape Carved Gold Frame
20th century gouache on board painting of two sailboats sailing side-by-side in a colorful seascape. The boats are named Bacchus and Ariadne. In Greek mythology, Ariadne was abandoned by her love Theseus her while she slept, on the Greek island of Naxos. Distraught, Ariadne was wandering along the shore searching for sight of her lover's ship, when she was surprised by the wine god Bacchus. He had fallen in love with her and asked her to marry him, offering her the sky as a wedding gift, in which one day she would become a constellation. Romance! This piece is a beautiful modern interpretation. The colors are brilliant, and all aspects are very well done. Signed lower right (G.A. Prappas?). The custom, carved gold frame sets this piece off beautifully. One-of-a-kind in every respect. Artwork in frame measures 21.5" x 25.5". Artwork and frame in excellent condition.
