From the Philadelphia Inquirer:
Since 1961, Steve was a frequent sight in North Philadelphia: for 35 years as a professor in the Biology Department at Temple University and then for 25 more as an accomplished artist, standing on hundreds of different street corners over the years with his easel and oil paints. He took classes at Fleisher Art Memorial and the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Dr. Takats exhibited his works at Artists’ House Gallery, Chestnut Hill Gallery, and the F.A.N. Gallery, all in Philadelphia.
His favorite painting spots were the neighborhoods near Temple, as well as Kensington and Manayunk. Outside the city, he focused on pastoral scenes in Erdenheim and West Chester.
He also painted on Cape Cod and in Italy.
